The new Resident Evil movie produced by Sony Pictures and directed by Zach Cregger continues to generate interest as its September 2026 release date approaches. After announcing that actor Paul Walter Hauser would be joining the cast, the director revealed new details about the nature of the story and the characters that will appear in the movie.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly,Cregger explained that the film will present a completely original story, adding that the audience will feel that the work carries its own imprint but still takes place within the framework of the well-known Resident Evil universe and emphasized that he does not seek to reuse key characters such as Leon Kennedy for a new story, but prefers to offer a different experience that respects the legacy of the series.
Despite the absence of beloved characters like Leon, the director stressed that the film will still adhere to the story that the developers have built over the years, noting that all the core elements that players love will still be present and the goal is to make the film fresh, bold and quirky but without compromising the roots of the series.
