After disappearing for more than a year, the DMZ mode that debuted in Modern Warfare 2 in 2022 is returning, but this return is not what players expected, Activision announced that the experience will return on December 11 through Call of Duty: Mobile only in the Season 11 update under the name DMZ: Recon.
DMZ: Recon offers a scaled-down version of the original extraction experience with a focus on a mix of PvP and AI combat. Unlike the classic version, the team seems to have avoided elements that previously sparked controversy, most notably the penalties for player-on-player clashes, as the squad recruitment system found in the original DMZ is not available.
According to COD Mobile leaks and information from private preview sessions, DMZ: Recon offers a feature set that includes:
- Full first-person perspective.
- An in-match shop to purchase weapons and equipment.
- Bosses in each map and loot based on a tier system with very rare items.
- Weapon upgrades during gameplay.
- Ability to purchase vehicles in-match.
- Only 8 teams of 3 players per match for a smaller, more focused experience.
- Maps and an entry and exit system inspired by the original.
Circulating information indicates that the mode will be released with two maps at launch, Serpent Island and Building 21, the latter of which is clearly inspired by the original DMZ location.
Trial attendees also confirmed that players will land via Wingsuit and will be allowed to use Killstreaks, carry 3 weapons, and perform an extraction via helicopter just like in the first DMZ.
While many are happy to see DMZ return to the scene, the fact that it is exclusive to COD Mobile only has caused some dissatisfaction, especially from mainstream platformers who wished the extraction mode would return to Modern Warfare 3 or Warzone.
