The Game Awards 2025 was an exceptional moment for fans of the Tomb Raider series as two new games were revealed at once: a remake of the original 1996 game and an all-new chapter titled Tomb Raider: Catalyst that takes Lara Croft to North India on an unprecedented adventure.
As excitement builds around the new installment, the development team has revealed important details to reassure new players in particular.
During a virtual Q&A session attended by GamesRadar+, Crystal Dynamics studio head Scott Amos talked about Catalyst’s place in the series’ timeline, explaining that the game takes place in:
The furthest point in Lara Croft’s career.
He noted that everything before that is part of the character’s history and is not required to understand the events of the new game.
Despite this chronological advancement in Lara’s story, Amos emphasized that new players won’t have to go back to previous installments:
“You can jump right in and go through the adventure as it is, there’s no homework required.
He added that Tomb Raider: Catalyst is designed to be a complete experience from start to finish so that the player can understand the story and characters without having to know previous events or the historical background of the series.
Amos revealed that Catalyst is “the biggest Tomb Raider game we’ve ever done.
The biggest Tomb Raider game we’ve ever made.
He explained that the game will offer vast and diverse worlds filled with landscapes that encourage exploration in an experience that aims to raise the bar for the series in terms of scale and diversity.
