Wizards of the Coast, owner of popular franchises such as Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, has announced a new development team that includes former developers from EA’s canceled Black Panther project.
According to company president John Hight’s statements to Games Industry, the new team is led by Michael de Plater, former director at Monolith Productions, best known for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The team also includes 14 other developers from the recently shuttered Cliffhanger Studios.
The project is still in the conceptualization phase, with the team beginning to develop initial concepts and formulate ideas. While Hight was reticent to reveal specific details, he described the idea as “something new and very exciting.”
Hight explained that the team will go through a lengthy process of formulating and testing ideas before moving on to full development, adding:
“We’re not going to set a timeframe right now, we want to give the team enough time to do things right.”
With this announcement, it seems that Wizards of the Coast is looking to capitalize on the expertise of creators who have made their mark on big projects, in order to deliver an all-new experience that may surprise players in the years to come.
