Rockstar has continued to generate positive buzz around Red Dead Redemption after announcing the launch of the New Generation Optimized version, confirming that players on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch will receive a completely free upgrade to the optimized version when it becomes available.
According to Rockstar’s official blog, everyone who owns the original version digitally on PlayStation 4, Switch, or the backward compatibility version on Xbox One will be able to upgrade without having to pay any additional fees.
The company also confirmed that PlayStation 4 players will be able to use their old save files directly in the enhanced version and Switch players will be able to use their Switch 1 save files when switching to Switch 2.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S users will receive maximum optimizations, most notably up to 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, HDR support, and optimized image quality, while Switch 2 will support DLSS, HDR, 60 frames per second gameplay, mouse support, and high-definition graphics
This announcement comes after a huge wave of news about the series, including the availability of Red Dead Redemption in the Plus catalog on December 2, 2025, and Red Dead Redemption 2 reaching the fourth place globally in terms of the number of copies sold.
