After October’s Closed Technical Test ended, Bungie officially announced a new community test for Marathon in December 2025, the move gives players a new opportunity to experience the latest version of the highly anticipated mining game, but at the same time it highlights the absence of the most important information: The full release date.
According to the game’s official website, the Marathon December Community Playtest will take place from December 12 to December 15, 2025 and will be available on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with full adherence to the NDA agreement, meaning that players are not allowed to share footage or impressions publicly.
The test is also exclusive to North America, leaving other gamers to wait for a later opportunity.
Although the leaked data from the recent closed test was positive, there has been no official announcement of the game’s release date, and although Sony previously confirmed that Marathon will be released before March 2026, the exact month within this framework is still completely unknown, and with increasing competition from games such as ARC Raiders and Escape from Tarkov, Bungie needs to make a clear plan for the next period.
Marathon represents Bungie’s attempt to relaunch the Extraction Shooter with a modern competitive theme, and despite the excitement around the idea, the team faces a huge challenge: building player trust again, presenting a distinct identity amidst very strong titles, committing to improving the game based on testing, and setting a firm release date before breaking into the market in 2026.
