A report by Alinea Analytics revealed that PlayStation Studios’ games on Steam generated more than $1.2 billion for Sony after Valve’s share of the revenue was deducted.
According to the report, the company estimated that the total revenue generated exceeded 1.5 billion dollars, of which Valve received about 350 million dollars through various deduction percentages:
- 30% of sales in the beginning
- 25% after the game reaches $10 million
- 20% after exceeding $50 million
Despite these cuts, the report emphasizes that the results are still excellent for Sony.
Alinea estimates that Helldivers 2 is the most successful PlayStation game on Steam, having sold 12.7 million copies since its release in February 2024. Behind her comes:
- Horizon Zero Dawn around 4.5 million copies
- God of War (2018) around 4.2 million copies
- Days Gone around 3.4 million copies
- Spider-Man Remastered around 2.7 million copies
These games were the main driver behind Sony’s big revenues on the platform.
Despite the success, Alinea notes that PlayStation’s “new appeal” on Steam is starting to wane as most of the audience eager to experience exclusive games has already gotten what they want.
The report cites two notable examples: God of War 2018 sold 2.5 million copies in 427 days, 2.5 times more than Ragnarök in the same period on Steam, while Spider-Man Remastered sold twice as much as Spider-Man 2 in 294 days on the platform, suggesting that subsequent releases are not getting the same strong start.
While rumors are swirling that Sony may adjust its strategy for releasing games on Steam, the financial data clearly indicates that it could lose a significant amount of money if it reduces its reliance on the platform.
The performance of PlayStation games on Steam is strong, the numbers clearly show that the partnership is mutually beneficial, and as the PC market continues to grow, this move could be one of the most important sources of expansion for Sony in the coming years.
