Shawn Layden, former head of PlayStation’s North American division, emphasized that exclusive games will not disappear from next-generation consoles despite the great technological advances made by computers and their increasing ability to compete with gaming consoles in terms of performance and technical power.
Lyden explained that exclusives are a key element of a console’s identity as they give gamers a clear reason to choose a particular console over others, adding that the decision to purchase a console is not based solely on technical specifications or hardware power, but also on the unique experiences that can only be experienced on that console.
Lyden pointed out that major gaming companies, led by Sony and PlayStation, invest huge amounts of money in developing exclusive titles not only to support short-term sales, but to build a long-term relationship with the audience and enhance the value of the device over the years of its life in the market.
He explained that these games are often designed to maximize the technical characteristics of the device, whether in terms of storage speed, processing capabilities, or control techniques, which results in a different gaming experience that is difficult to transfer or replicate with the same quality on other platforms.
While recognizing the increasing convergence between the world of computers and gaming consoles, Leyden believes that this convergence will not lead to the elimination of the concept of exclusives, but may only change the way they are offered or the timing of their arrival on other platforms at later stages. However, exclusives will remain a major factor in the competition between gaming companies and one of the main pillars on which the next generation gaming industry will be built.
