Recent job postings at Sledgehammer Games, one of the series’ main development studios, have revealed a clear intention to seek developers with previous experience working on the Nintendo Switch or mobile-oriented games with near-platform capabilities.
The job that appeared on LinkedIn was for a Technical Technical Developer and explicitly stated that having experience in AAA mobile or Switch is a plus for the applicant, and this phrase alone was enough to reignite speculation about the studio’s next project, which is believed to be released in 2027.
The last appearance of the series on Nintendo consoles was with Call of Duty: Ghosts in 2013, and since then, Call of Duty games have remained exclusive to PC and console platforms despite the immense popularity of the franchise around the world, but the situation changed drastically after the completion of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October 2023, as regulators committed Microsoft to bring the series to Nintendo platforms for up to 10 years, and although two years have passed since the agreement, implementation has not actually begun yet.
The biggest obstacle has always been the power of the hardware. The first Switch was unable to run modern Call of Duty games stably, but the situation changed with the Switch 2, which was released this year and proved with its first games that it is capable of running huge AAA experiences with quality comparable to the current generation hardware.
This development makes it more realistic than ever for Call of Duty to appear on the Switch 2, whether with Sledgehammer due out in 2027 or even Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 4, which is planned for 2026.
No official confirmation yet, but all signs from Microsoft’s agreement to the power of the Switch 2 to the demand for developers with experience on the platform suggest that we could be looking at the first official release of the series on Nintendo hardware in less than two years.
