As the gaming industry debates the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on hiring and creativity, CD Projekt RED broke its silence to reveal its official stance on the technology during a Q&A session as part of a recent earnings report.
During the session, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski was asked about the studio’s hiring policies, especially in light of the large number of technical talent on the market and the rapid proliferation of AI tools.
Nowakowski explained that the increased availability of talent in the gaming industry in recent years is not primarily due to AI, but rather to what he described as disruptions at other studios due to project cancellations and mass layoffs, and emphasized that the studio has not seen a single case where AI has been a direct cause of job losses.
“We are not hiring traditional IT experts:
“We’re not hiring traditional IT experts, but if you’re talking about game industry talent, it may have increased a little bit over the last three years. However, I don’t think it’s because of AI. The truth is that some studios have experienced disruptions and project closures, leading to massive layoffs in the industry, and we’ve all seen that… but I can’t think of a single time where it was directly caused by AI
As for the use of AI within CD Projekt RED, Novakovsky emphasized that its role is limited to improving productivity and facilitating certain processes without being a means of replacing developers or reducing teams. He added that the current benefits of the technology are real and tangible, but by no means does it reach the stage of developing an entire game independently.
He emphasized:
“I can’t imagine AI sitting down and making a game. I don’t think it will contribute to the development of The Witcher 5 or 6 or any similar project
This stance is in line with other recent statements from prominent industry figures, including Larian founder Swen Vincke, who called for caution with new technologies while acknowledging the use of generative AI in early stages such as concept sketches, and Warhorse co-founder Daniel Vávra expressed a similar experience with AI tools.
In the end, CD Projekt RED’s stance presents a more conservative view than some other studios, emphasizing that AI can be a helpful tool but is not a substitute for the creativity and human expertise behind the development of massive games like Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher series.
